Post subject:  Free Throw & Foul Huddle

Coaches,

I see teams that after a foul, or before free throw attempts, the team gets together for a quick huddle before breaking back to their set defense or free throw positions.

How is this taught and why? What purpose and what is talked about in these short huddles?

How do you get from huddle back to where people need to be?

I'm curious about this, because I've never done it, and I want to understand it and possibly implement it.

I used these to let the players talk, especially if I'd just called a defensive press or set. For it to work effectively, you need a team leader/captain who can convey the call. If I called a full court press, the captain can remind everyone to get their man. If I called a 1/2 court press, the captain reminds everyone where to go. You don't want everyone talking at once since you only have a few seconds.

On a key FT, the non-shooters are encouraging the shooter. Overall, I think it allows the players to have a quick team meeting of sorts and keeps the concept of constant communication going.
