Post subject:  New Coach Help

Hi,

My name is Derek. My 12 year olds basketball team is starting back in about 2 weeks and they
Don't have a coach. Myself and another parent are going to take on the coaching duties but
Unfortunately neither of us have any experience which is scaring the pants off me right now, we
Don't want to let the girls down. If you can give us some advice, help with what we should do,
We would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

Derek

Derek,

Step one is to determine your coaching philosophy:
https://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/coaching/philosophy.html
Even if it's as simple as "allow players to have fun, foster a love for the game, and improve their skills". There are lots of different levels of basketball (rec to high level club), coaching personalities, logistical constraints, and so on. So goals can vary. In any case, once you have an idea of your goals and what you want players to get from this, you figure things out from there.

Read all the text on this page. There are lots of links but there is very important text and tips from top to bottom. Read this page:
https://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/coaching/youthbasketball.html

Beyond that, at the youth level, I just suggest being organized, have a practice plan documented for each practice, keep things fun but still work hard, teach a really simple motion offense, teach man to man defense, and spend lots of time on skill development.

If needed, we have resources on all those subjects. If you need links let us know and we can give you links to those resources.

Good luck!
