Post subject:  motivation and confidence

How can I help my son play to his fullest potential? He is a senior in HS and has signed with a Div II team. He is a pure shooter, has already reached 2000 points in his HS career and a very structured player and seems to not have as much motivation as previous years. I'm not sure if it's because he has already accomplished what he set out to accomplish or he just needs a little more motivation from his coach. One of my son's teammates father is an assistant coach and also the principal of the school. I feel this parent being an assistant coach and the principal is a huge conflict of interest. This player gets to play whatever position he wants to, even though he is the tallest player on the team, he is allowed to play at the perimeter and is a very selfish player. I have been told by many that my son is very un-selfiish and is not taking enough shots this year. Last year my son averaged 19 ppg, 6 rpg and 4 apg. This year he barely gets to touch the ball. His confidence is plummeting. Don't know what to do, very frustrating for my son and me as a parent watching his HS career end this way. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Its a shame that politics plays a part of athletics, especially at this level, but it does. Maybe your son should sit down with the head coach and ask him HOW he can help the team be more successful. He could bring up the stats from last year and mention how things are going this year? I don't know what kind of relationship he has with the coach.... IF he is close to the guy he can come right out and speak his mind... IF things are as bad as you say they are, he has nothing to lose.,

What are his stats this year? Shots taken and shots made? .How many rebounds pg and how many assists?? Is his team winning? What is their record?

I guess he can look at it this way - the season is almost over and he can move on to greener pastures,

It is not clear from your post, but what does you son's teamate's dad (assitant coach) have to do with your son's motivation and confidence????

Certainly, the fact that he signed already may have him "relax" and not work as hard. We have all seen players in their "contract" year have carrer years looking for the big money that follows. Hopefully, he'll figure out soon that him signing means he has to work that much harder.

Your kid needs to focus on what he can control and what he can do to help the team. Some times that is making the assist. Other's it is to make the pass to make the assist. Other's it is to take that open shot.

At the end of the day, he has to be self motivated to be the best he can be each and everyday. At his age, those that figure it out go on to great things. Those that don't, have a "fun" first semester at collage and end up at Best Buy in the spring. Good luck.
