{"id":785,"date":"2020-05-19T18:48:54","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T18:48:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/podcast\/?p=785"},"modified":"2020-05-19T18:50:04","modified_gmt":"2020-05-19T18:50:04","slug":"10-highly-effective-qualities-in-elite-coaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/podcast\/10-highly-effective-qualities-in-elite-coaches\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Highly Effective Qualities in Elite Coaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maya Angelou once said, <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u201cAt the end of the day people won&#8217;t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember the bliss I felt the day my college coach taught me an in<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">valuable lesson; if you want to learn how to do anything well in life, teach it.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although I have forgotten a lot in the 22 years since that encounter, I remember these things because they are behind my passion for coaching the game of basketball and teaching character development that goes beyond the court.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elite coaches represent themselves first as genuine humanitarians, they seek to better the lives of others and second as developers of competitors.\u00a0 They always find a way to effectively communicate a positive perspective. They go beyond training the mind and body; they influence the soul.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exceptional coaches teach more than how to be nimble and execute plays.\u00a0 They form the cornerstone of their player\u2019s personal belief systems. Some use passionate words of encouragement.\u00a0 Others use a style that makes you stretch your mind by using an uncomfortable in-your-face approach. My experience with the latter type of coach taught me to concentrate on the content of the coach\u2019s message rather than the tone.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are 10 qualities I believe all highly effective coaches share:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make players feel good about themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show empathy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congratulate publicly, critique privately.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen to players (EVERYONE can get better here).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explain mistakes when they happen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stretch player\u2019s minds to develop character (grit, passion, confidence, etc.).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take personal responsibility and hold players accountable for their actions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Routinely find new ways to help players improve.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treat everyone fairly but not the same.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expect excellence from themselves and others at every performance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact my little league football coaches had on me is unforgettable and I recall those feelings to this day.\u00a0 Coach Bubba called me \u201cFlutie\u201d because I could throw the football far like the NFL star. Coach Big O taught me how to be \u201cnice-ty\u201d by playing with an edge on the field and being a gentleman off the field.\u00a0 These coaches always brightened my day and left me feeling empowered. In my book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/My-Attack-Planner-Charlies-Basketball-ebook\/dp\/B07G8S6CJR\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Attack Planner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they are perfect examples of exceptional coaches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Now in my own 5th Quarter, which is coaching basketball, my number one priority is to impart wisdom to my players.\u00a0 Every lesson I teach is meant to evoke positive feelings and actions from my players. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I make it my daily mission to reach at least one player so they may experience the same powerful feelings I did as a young athlete.\u00a0 As I always remind my players, \u201cSometimes you win and sometimes you learn.
