4 vs. 2 Weakside Help Drill (Wings)

Categories: Defense  Rebounding
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

The purpose of this drill is to teach the defensive players to get into the correct defensive position while guarding the wings when the ball is moved around the perimeter so that they can provide early help on a dribble drive from the weakside.

Instructions

  • Offensive players 1 and 2 can play live but cannot score. They are only guarded in help situations.
  • Defensive players 3 and 4 must guard their corresponding offensive players as the ball is moved around the perimeter.
  • As the ball is moved to the opposite side of the court, defensive player 4 closes out on offensive player 4.
  • Defensive player 3 drops into the lane splitting the rim and low enough so that he can see the ball and his man (3).
  • If offensive player 4 beats defensive player 4 off the dribble, defensive player 3 must sprint to help on the ball at least a foot outside of the lane.
  • We do not want to help inside the lane, that is too late.

Points of Emphasis:

  • Sprint to closeouts.
  • Position yourself in the middle of the lane if you are guarding a weakside offensive player.
  • Weakside defender needs to provide help outside the lane if his teammate gets beat off the dribble.
  • If your feet are still in the lane on your help, it is too late.
