Purpose of the Drill:

Improve ball handling skills, ball protection and finishing lay-ups

Instructions

  • Start at either elbow with a ball
  • take one dribble and complete layup off the glass
  • ensure that you bring your non-dribbling hand to the ball so that your lead shoulder is between the ball the imaginary defender.
  • Extra emphasis should be placed on "smacking the ball" so that the layup is made from a position of strength.
  • make layup
  • rebound out of net (no bounce)
  • return with 1-2 dribbles to same elbow
  • proceed across the lane with one elbow for reverse layup
  • rebound layup
  • proceed on dribble to opposite elbow
  • use conversion dribble (behind back, through legs, crossover)
  • make straight layup on opposite side with proper hand, proper foot
  • rebound ball from net
  • proceed with 1-2 dribbles back to elbow
  • use conversion dribble
  • proceed across the lane for reverse layup
  • rebound layup
  • proceed to original elbow
  • repeat steps 1-4
  • make 10 layups in this fashion
  • time and make players compete for best time.

Points of Emphasis:

  • protect the ball by bringing your free hand to the ball.
  • use outside hand when dribbling.
  • use proper foot to lift off and proper hand when finishing.
  • work on reverse lay-ups

Motivation/Teaching Tips:

  • have a goal of ten made lay-ups in a certain amount of time depending on age.
  • high school players should make ten in 25-30 seconds
  • middle school players 30-35 seconda
  • youth players can skip the reverse layups and just work right and left hand layups
