North Carolina Shooting

Categories: Footwork  Passing  Shooting
Ages: Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

This drill will work passing, shooting and footwork while moving. Your entire team can participate at once also.

Instructions

  • Divide your whole team into any of the 6 possible lines as shown.
  • You will need to start out with a line of players under each basket and a line of players at each of the 4 hash marks on the sidelines. One of the lines under the baskets needs a basketball and each of the lines on the sides needs a basketball.
  • The first 3 players in the drill (in this example that is Player 5, Player 4 and Player 3) start to move towards the opposite end of the court.
  • Player 5 will pass to Player 4 then Player 5 runs down the middle of the floor.
  • Player 3 starts to run to the opposite end.
  • Player 4 receives the pass from Player 5 and is moving down the floor
  • Once Player 4 gets the pass he needs to pass it back to Player 5
  • Player 3 is still running down the other side of the floor
  • Player 5 gets the pass from Player 4 and turns and passes it to the other side of the court to Player 3.
  • Player 4 now runs to the 3 point line
  • Player 5 continues to run down the court
  • When Player 3 gets the pass he will bounce pass the basketball to Player 5 for a lay up
  • Player 5 shoots the lay up and Player 1 underneath the basket gets the rebound.
  • Now the lines on the sides get involved.
  • Player 2 on the side passes it across the court to Player 3, Player 3 then shoots the jumpshot.
  • Player 1 on the side passes it across the court to Player 4, Player 4 then shoots the jumpshot.
  • One of the across court passes should be a bounce pass and the other should be an overhead pass. The players on the side should communicate as to who will throw which pass.
  • Player 1 underneath the basket gets the rebound and now runs towards the opposite end of the floor.
  • Player 1 passes the basketball to either Player 2 or Player 1 from the side
  • Repeat the same processes in Steps 2 through 6 on the opposite end of the floor.
  • Once Player 4 and Player 3 have taken their jumpshots they get their own rebounds and take the basketball back to the lines on the side.
  • It is important that all players are paying attention during the drill and that they are filling in the lines underneath the basket and on the sidelines.
  • Follow same as Step 2
  • Repeat Steps 2 through 6 until you feel your team has figured out the process of the drill. Then try and add a time and score limit for some added motivation.

Points of Emphasis:

  • Good passing and footwork are important during this drill.
  • Teamwork and communication are also important during the drill.

Motivation/Teaching Tips:

  • My teams try to score 60 baskets (points) in 3 minutes. Each made basket (jumpshot or lay up) is worth 1 point and a missed lay up is minus 1 point. If the we do not reach the goal then the players owe me a sprint for each point they are short.
