Flex Offense - Dwight Middle School

Categories: Offense (Team)
Ages: Middle School  High School+

Summary:

This play is created with the philosophy that movement into open spaces, setting off ball screens and cutting are the cornerstones of good fundamental basketball.

Personnel:

5 players.

Instructions

  • Play setup: 3 guards spaced out above the 3 point line. 2 Forwards are in the short sorners.
  • Guard passes the ball to either side and replaces the player he passed it to.
  • The guard with the ball now dribbles to the middle to replace the Point Guard.
  • At the same time the pass on top occurs, a cross screen is made on the low block (Never inside the paint).
  • The other Forward goes on top of the defense (Never under the basket, always on top of the defense).
  • A double down screen is set to bring up the Forwards.
  • The ball is passed to either wing.
  • The opposite forward will flash to the high post ABOVE the defense to receive the ball.
  • As the ball is entered into the high post, the defense will contract around the ball and the forwards will be looking to help in case of a dribble down the middle.
  • The Guard with the ball (#1) will the usea front pivot to turn and evaluate.
  • #1's options are:
  • A: Shoot if they're open
  • B: Drive to the basket if the help defense is not there yet.
  • C: Look to pass to #4 on the backdoor screen.
  • D: Look to pass to #5 on the weak side.
  • For safety and to be able to reset the play, #2 will move to an open spot on the wing to allow for a pass out.

Additional Comments:

Be patient.

Keep good spacing - the further away from each other the better.

Keep good eye contact and signal to one another if you're going to set a screen. Putting your fist up is a good way to go. Nonverbal communication is key.

Make strong cuts and stay in front of the defense. Do not hide behind them.

Do not be afraid to reset. Most defenses will start making mistakes after 10-15 seconds, so the longer you run this with patience - the better.
