8 X 8 Foot Finish Drill

Categories: Offensive Moves
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

Same as the 4 X 4 drill, except both offensive and defensive players start at 8 feet from the rim at different angles and is an opportunity to teach offensive players how to hurry, read the defense, protect the ball and finish the play well.

Instructions

  • Both offensive and defensive players start eight feet from the basket at different angles.
  • On the command "GO", the offensive player quickly makes a move to the rim and finishes the play. The offensive player should be aggressive and take a good, on balance shot.
  • The defender tries to get the offensive player to take a tough shot or pass the ball back out.

Points of Emphasis:

  • Offensive player should be quick, strong, and end with a great finish.
  • The coach should emphasize that players who are the aggressors and can finish will help the team.
  • The defender is trying to also exhibit these qualities, quick, strong and not giving up an easy, high percentage shot.
