Half Court Escape 1 on 1

Categories: Offensive Moves
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

To teach the player who has escaped at mid-court (with a defender chasing from behind) how to use the body, protect the ball, know what the defender is doing, and get up a good shot at the rim.

Instructions

  • Offensive player puts his back foot on the jump ball circle and the defender puts his back foot on the mid-court line in the middle of the circle.
  • Defender should have an angle on the offensive player and will attempt to cut the offensive player off.
  • On "GO!" the players take off toward the basket. The offensive player glances over his shoulder two or three times to see exactly what the defender is attempting to do, while still protecting the ball on the opposite side away from the defender.
  • The offensive player can force the defender to change the chase angle by moving over in the path of the defender.
  • Finally, the offensive player should determine if he can lay it in, or if he needs to veer toward the defender, change his angle and pace, and then step back outside to lay it in.
  • Also, if the defender is coming hard and is close, when to pump fake and let the defender go flying by.
  • The goal is to put up a good shot on the rim again and again.

Points of Emphasis:

Explosiveness to the basket, while at the same time seeing the defender, controlling and protecting the basketball.

Using the body to keep the defender on his back.

Converting a lay up with defensive pressure.
