48 Shooting
Ages: Middle School High School+
Purpose of the Drill:
This is a fun shooting drill that teaches shooting technique, footwork, develops confidence, and helps you determine a players range.
Instructions

- Start with two rebounders under the basket, both players have a ball. The shooter is at the top of the key.
- Players keep track of how many shots they make. Free throws are worth one, two pointers are worth two, and three pointers are worth three. They can score a total of 48 possible points.
- Player 1 starts at top of the key and cuts to the elbow. Player 2 passes to 1 to take the shot.

- Player 1 then move back to the top of the key and cuts to the opposite elbow (game speed).
- Player 3 passes the ball.
- Player 1 catches, does an front pivot with the inside foot, then shoots the ball.
- While this is happening, player 2 rebounds the ball and prepares to pass the ball.
- Player 1 moves back to the top of the key and repeats this process to take a total of 4 shots.

- After 4 shots are taken, the drill continues in a similar fashion. The only difference is that now player 1 dribbles to the elbow.
- Player 2 passes the ball. Player 1 takes 1 dribble towards the elbow and shoots a jump shot.
- After the shot is taken, player 1 goes back to the top of the key, catches the ball, and dribbles to the opposite elbow.
- This is continued until 4 shots are taken.

- After 4 shots are taken, the drill continues the same way. The only difference is that now player 1 catches the ball at the elbow and then makes a "cross over step back move" before shooting.
- The process repeats at both elbows until 4 shots are taken.

- Next, the drills continues the same way except player 1 performs a rocker (jab) step before taking the shot.
- The drill continues until 4 shots are taken.

- Now the player shoots 3's. If you have big players that normally play inside, you maybe want to consider letting them shoot 3's because it shows them why they shouldn't be shooting 3's in a game.

- Now player 1 shoots four free throws. The rebounders get the ball and pass them out to player 1.
- Once the player has taken all 24 shots their total points scored should be written down. The players rotate so everyone gets an opportunity to shoot. You can keep rotating for as long as you choose. It generally takes about 7 minutes for 3 players to complete one round.
Points of Emphasis:
- Make sure players use proper pivots and footwork during this drill.
- Cut at game speed.
- Develop a good shooting rhythm.
- Use proper shooting mechanics (hold follow through, jump straight up and down, get feet square, etc).
Motivation/Teaching Tips:
- Track the players points during the drill and through out the entire year. Chart their progress and show their improvement as the season goes on. Players generally improve their score by 5 or 6 points during the year. This is a tremendous confidence boost for players.
