1 Pass Denial

Categories: Agility  Defense
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

Teach players to deny the ball and properly position themselves 1 pass away from the ball. Excellent for footwork and body position.

Instructions

  • Start with 1 defensive player and 1 offensive player at the free throw line extended. The coach needs a ball at the top of the key
  • On the coaches cue, the offensive player tries to get open by v-cuting. The players are not allowed to go the the other side of the basket. They must stay on one side.
  • If the offensive player gets top, the coach can pass the ball.
  • The coach should occasionally start dribbling to the basket and the defensive player should step in to stop the ball. This reminds the defense to ALWAYS see their man and the ball (be ready to help!).
  • Once the players go live (100%) for a few seconds, the next player in line can be on offense. Offense goes to defense. Defense goes to back of the line.

Points of Emphasis:

  • The key is for the defensive player to keep a wide base just like they are guarding the ball. They should also face guard the ball and slide their feet as the defense moves. This makes it much easier to guard the offensive player. If the defense is struggling and straining to keep up, they just need to adjust their form.
  • The defense should always see their man and the ball. Be ready to help!
  • Reward players for good positioning.
  • The key is to not get beat back door, yet still deny the ball and cause pressure. If they can steal the pass without getting out of position, they should get it. However, never sacrifice good position. Use the outside hand to get the ball.
