Fastbreak Lanes

Categories: Offense (Team)  Transition
Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Summary:

Danny Miles runs a numbered fast break. If the players fill their lanes and look to transition, the fast break can be run on made baskets, as well as misses. The key is getting the ball in bounds quickly, looking up court, filling your lane, sprinting at all times, and looking to attack.

Personnel:

Bigs must be able to catch on the run and sprint upcourt. Guard must be willing to pass ahead and not dribble.

Instructions

  • On a rebound or a made basket, the key is to secure the ball or take it out of bounds quickly, and get it to the point guard (player 1) who is making a banana cut to get up court as quickly as possible.
  • Player 5 takes ball out of bounds or upon rebound gets it to player 1.
  • Player 4 sprints down the court right to the rim of his basket. Point looks to hit player 4 over the top for a lay-up.
  • Player 2 gets in the right wing lane. Even if player 2 is on the left side, he gets into the proper lane (right) before reaching half court.
  • Player 3 fills the left lane. Again, he gets into position by half court.
  • Player 5 rebounds and fills middle lane behind player 4.
  • Point guard looks to pass the up court to a sprinting player 4 at the rim, or players 2 and 3 on the wings.
  • Player 5 sprints upon rebound and is the middle lane trailer. Player 5 runs weak side to be in position to get a rebound.

Additional Comments:

Make sure the players sprint their lanes all 94 feet.
Have the player stay wide and know their lanes. Get all 5 players running their lanes properly.
Players must get in their lanes before reaching halfcourt.
Get the ball to the point guard as quickly as possible.
Point guard looks to pass ahead to the open man first, and not automatically dribble until defended
Look to attack each time.
Important for bigs to sprint each fast break.

Why do you think it is best for the 2 to always run down the right side (and 3 on the left) even if they are closer to the opposite side? Why wouldn''t they be interchangeable?
thank you,

It is not clear what the number 5 does after he runs the break. Could you explain?

If they run a motion offense with four out, one in, should the 5 stop at the top of the key?

usually the 5 is the trailer and will float at top of key - option to shoot or do a move
