Heat Fastbreak

Categories: Transition
Ages: Youth  Middle School

Summary:

Eventually, we want to get up tempo and take advantage of transition opportunities. This fast break will be a basic template for the players to use, so they can quickly convert a rebound or turnover into a scoring opportunity.

Personnel:

Players who can run, dribble with their head up, make passes on the run, have the ability to receive the pass on the move, keep the spacing, and convert a layup.

Instructions

  • In a rebound or steal down low situation, 4 rebounds the ball and hits 2 who is cutting up court.
  • 4 passes to 2 on the outside of his body, being very aware of where the defender is located.
  • 3 immediately sprints and fills the weakside lane.
  • 5 fills the middle lane
  • When 2 receives it, he immediately looks up for 1. If open, 2 passes to one and then sprints to fill lane.
  • 3 is sprinting on the weakside, filling the lane.
  • 5 is even with the ball and will be an option as a trailer.
  • 4 will stay behind the play, in case of a turnover to protect the basket.
  • 1 receives the ball and either looks up right away for 3, or takes a pushes the ball by dribbling towards the free throw line.
  • 2 is sprinting in a give and go down the lane.
  • 5 is trailing the play going about three-quarters speed, he does not want to run up the back of the ball handler.
  • 4 is coming up as well, keeping ten to fifteen feet away from 5.
  • As 1 approaches the free throw line, he looks for 3 or 2 for fast break layups.
  • 2 and 3 can hold if they are wide open at the blocks, but if guarded, they need to keep their run going and replace each other.
  • 1 needs look for 2 and 3 for layups, be away that they will be switching sides of the court, but also be aware that 5 is now the trailing player on the fast break.
  • 1 looks to hit 5 for layup, three or 2 for short jump shot, take a shot himself, or drive to the basket.
  • If nothing is there, 1 pulls it back out and 5 stays in post, 3 goes down, uses 5 and comes out to the wing, 4 goes to the opposite block and picks for 2, 2 flashes to wing and we start our offense.

Additional Comments:

We want speed and to push the ball, but not at the expense of being out of control. The passer is responsible for hitting an open man, and the person receiving the pass needs to get open and be aware of where the defenders are.

Passing is a key. Too much head down dribbling will slow the fastbreak and be a disincentive for players to run hard.
