Ages: All Ages  Youth  Middle School  High School+

Purpose of the Drill:

Teach players to block and an develop good habits by simulating game situations. Very good simulation for blocking out from a zone defense.

Instructions

  • 5 offensive players line up around the court.
  • 2 defensive players stand on each side of the lane.
  • A coach stand around the perimiter with a ball.
  • The coach calls our two numbers and shoots the ball.
  • The defensive players must then block out the players that had their number called and go get the rebound.
  • The offensive players that had their number called should go strong to the rim trying to get the ball.
  • After the ball is secured, the players should get back to their spots and repeat the sequence. The coach should mix things up by calling our different numbers

Points of Emphasis:

  • Getting low and checking your man.
  • Hustling after the ball.

Frank -

I think that this is a little like football.... sometimes its "block the most dangerous man"

In this case (at least to me) its #4, I would have 2 get him and 1 get #5.

This is something that you can try in practice and see which works out best for you. You never know where the ball is going to go after it hits the rim... although I have always heard that the ball will go opposite of the shot. You might want to track that in practice or a couple of games so you can plan your philosophy.

how is the organization when in case of the coach call, for example, ''4 and 5!'', in this case defender number 1 is in the other side of the lane, an totally oposite side from where the offensive players called are... so.. in this case.. wich player should defender no. 1 box out.. no. 4 or no. 5?
