3 on 3 transistion
Ages: All Ages Youth Middle School High School+
Purpose of the Drill:
Teach both 3 on 3 scoring and 3 on 3 defense. Also the transistion from offense to defense.
Instructions

- Divide team in three lines at mid court facing a basket. First man in each line turns around and faces line. Ball starts in the middle. Play 3 on 3. When offense loses ball or scores than the following happens. On a score or steal, defense throws it back to one of the lines at half. If it goes to the side it must be thrown to the middle before it is allowed to cross half. Defense team than sprints outside of court to end of one of the lines at half, rotating to a different line than they were in at start. The offensive team turns to defense and sprints to half court to pick-up the next person in line. They will have to communicate as to who gets who, depending on their position on the court. The offensive team can go as soon as the ball is in the hands of the middle player. If the offensive team gets an uncontested lay-up the defensive team does some punishment. (sprint, push-up, something quick) You can work on different levels in this drill. Offense can work on pass and cut. Pass and screen away. Pass and pick and roll or what ever you have in three on three within your offensive sets. Defense must use transition techniques, trapping, recovery, rebounding and outlets. The degree of aggression can be increased as the players develop their understanding of help and recovery.

- After the shot or steal is made the ball is thrown back to half and offense goes on defense and the defense sprints to end of lines at half.
Points of Emphasis:
- Positioning of defense man. I use the idea of having one hand point to ball, your other hand (fist) at the man you are guarding. Back to basket, and between ball and basket.
- Offense must be in motion and making moves (pick and roll, screens, cuts) that will end up with good shot.
- Both offense and defense use rebounding techniques.
