Bounce Back, Passing, Shooting Drill
Ages: All Ages Youth Middle School High School+
Purpose of the Drill:
Teach players to bounce back (back up dribble) when stopped on penetration, reverse the ball (passing), and then the player spotting up will catch and shoot. This drill works well with 2-5 players at a basket. You can see Mike Lee explaining the bounce back dribble and reversal concept in this video at the 2:03 mark:

Instructions

- The chairs represent defensive players -- this is how the defense might be positioned if player 1 drives to the basket and gets stopped by the help defense (he's almost in a trapped situation). Note: You might want to put broomsticks on the chairs, so players dont do overhead passes over the chairs.
- The first player will drive at the chair, then do a bounce back dribble (creating space from the defense).

- Once player 1 backs up far enough for a good passing angle, he throws the reversal pass to player 4.
- Player 4 should be ready to catch and shoot (hands up, knees bent). When player 4 receives the ball he should shoot.

- Player 4 should hustle to get the rebound and go to the end of the line.
- Player 1 now becomes the shooter. Player 2 drives to the basket and the drill continues.
Points of Emphasis:
- The player dribbling the ball should turn his shoulder when getting to the chair to protect the ball, do a hard bounce back (like a defensive shuffle step) getting as much space from the defense as possible.
- Make a good crisp chest pass hitting the receiver in the chest.
- Shooter should have their hands up, fingers pointing up, knees bent, ready to catch and shoot as quickly as possible.
- Switch sides to practice on both sides of the basket.
