Purpose of the Drill:

Knight is a drill that is a breakdown drill for a zone offense. Allows more touches and shots for the players than just running a 5-0 or 5-5 zone offense.

Instructions

  • Start the drill with three playres and two coaches. A post, Player 4, a player at the foul line, Player 2, and a point, Player 1.
  • Point guard takes a dribble entry to the wing.
  • Player 2 pops out to three point line.
  • Player 1 reverses the ball to the top of the key.
  • Player 2 swings the ball to the coach on the opposite wing.
  • The post player, flashes to the strong side elbow as the ball is being reversed.
  • The coach on the wing passes to Player 4 on the elbow. Player 4 can take a shot
  • Player 1 makes a cut to the strong side baseline.
  • Second coach passes the ball to Player 1 for a shot from the baseline.
  • Another version of Knight, is to have the Post and Player 2 start side by side at the foul line.
  • Player 1 dribbles to the wing.
  • When Player 1 approaches the wing, Player 2 cuts to the top of the key.
  • Player 1 passes to Player 2 at the top of the key.
  • Player 4 cuts out to the wing.
  • Player 2 continues to reverse the ball to Player 4.
  • Player 1 flashes across the foul line.
  • Player 4 hits the flashing Player 1 for a jump shot.
  • Another option is to add a coach with a ball on the wing.
  • When Player 2 passes to Player 4, he fades to the foul line extended on the weak side and the coach does a skip pass to Player 2 for a shot.
  • Now, insert 4 defenders and 4 offensive players and run the combinations that have been used in this drill.

Points of Emphasis:

  • Make sure the post times his cut to the elbow so he is not waiting for the pass from the wing.
  • Make sure there is quick ball reversal.
