{"id":796,"date":"2015-09-16T07:22:35","date_gmt":"2015-09-16T12:22:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/?p=796"},"modified":"2015-10-13T06:28:15","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T11:28:15","slug":"how-to-get-all-your-players-sprinting-back-in-transition-defense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/how-to-get-all-your-players-sprinting-back-in-transition-defense","title":{"rendered":"How To Get ALL Your Players Sprinting Back In Transition Defense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We all know the FIRST THREE STEPS are critical for\u00a0getting back into good transition defense. \u00a0Those first three steps must be a sprint! \u00a0In most cases, if the first three steps are a sprint, the following steps will follow suit and players will be in a good position to stop the ball.<\/p>\n<p>But how do you get players sprinting on those first three steps every time?<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jamelle Cornley Fast Break\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/acaben\/2132606538\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2403\/2132606538_3b68da54b5_z.jpg\" alt=\"Jamelle Cornley Fast Break\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><script src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution 1 (this is NOT a good long term solution in my opinion). <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During game and scrimmages, the coach can yell SPRINT each time the ball transitions to the other team. \u00a0This works but you want players to remember on their own.<\/p>\n<p>I did this for our last practice (with our 5th grade girls) and it certainly worked. \u00a0But I don&#8217;t want to continue doing this!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solutions 2 (I hope this is a better solution)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At our next practice I will try adding some new rules to our scrimmages so players start remembering on their own&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Rule: When the ball transitions to the other team, your first three steps must be a sprint. \u00a0If not, you lose 1 point. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I will try this and start deducting points from their score each time I see a player breaking the rule. \u00a0I&#8217;ll also be sure to let them know when they lose points.<\/p>\n<p>If that doesn&#8217;t work, I might try something else. \u00a0But my preference is to utilize competitive games with &#8220;modified rules&#8221; to get the results that we want. That is generally my favorite way to solve problems.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, I plan to experiment to see what works on Friday. \u00a0I&#8217;ll let you know how it goes.<\/p>\n<p>If you have tried anything similar with success, please let me know.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>9\/21\/15 UPDATE: \u00a0It worked. \u00a0I tried the new rule on Friday and it was extremely effective. Players were consistently sprinting back on defense.
