Practice Plan &#038; Drills (Sophomores 2013\/14)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As our team agreed on during our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/excited-had-our-first-mandatory-meeting-with-the-players-off-to-good-start\/\">pre-season player meeting<\/a>, we will be focusing on the following this season:<\/p>\n<p>1) Defense (man to man)<br \/>\n2) Rebounding<br \/>\n3) Ball security (take care of the ball \/ minimize turnovers)<br \/>\n4) Offensive scoring fundamentals and skills<\/p>\n<p>We believe that by focusing on these 4 areas and putting the most emphasis on these areas, we&#8217;ll have the best chance for success.<\/p>\n<p>Along the same lines, I believe you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/coaching\/three-things.html\">only be good at 3 or 4 things<\/a>. \u00a0And if you try to do too much, you won&#8217;t be good at anything.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, here is the plan for our 10th grade boys first day of basketball practice:<\/p>\n<h3>Day 1 &#8211; Basketball Practice Plan and Drills<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Intro (3 min)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Quickly review <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/new-core-values-for-our-201314-basketball-season\/\">our core values<\/a>. \u00a0Get everyone locked in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebounding (15 min)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pvVFFdZe9yw\">Backboard Rebounding\/Outlet<\/a>\u00a0(5 min)<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/drills\/reactionrebounding.html\">Reaction Rebounding<\/a>\u00a0(10 min)<\/p>\n<p><b>On Ball Defense (20 min)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stance<\/li>\n<li>Push step<\/li>\n<li>Hip turn<\/li>\n<li>Hip turn, push step.<\/li>\n<li>Hip turn, cross &amp; sprint.<\/li>\n<li>Close Outs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note: \u00a0These drills are hard to explain without video. \u00a0All the defense drills and concepts can be found on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/pr\/huber-defense.html\">Jim Huber&#8217;s Man to Man Defense DVDs<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Footwork and Shooting (50 min)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/drills\/formshooting.html\">Form shooting<\/a> (3 min)<br \/>\nAll footwork together (5 min)<br \/>\nDribble to chair in post &#8211; all footwork (30 seconds each)<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: \u00a0We want players to learn our footwork terminology and become proficient in the 3 pivots and 3 counters that we teach &#8212; because this footwork is used in post moves, perimeter moves, dribble moves, boxing out, coming off screens, and other situations. \u00a0These situations are easy to teach once they learn the base pivots and counters. \u00a0These are the same pivots taught by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/donkelbick.html\">Don Kelbick<\/a>. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Motion offense \/ screening \/ shooting \/ passing \/ footwork drill (30 min)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>turn down screen<\/li>\n<li>curl<\/li>\n<li>flare<\/li>\n<li>4 back<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note: \u00a0I haven&#8217;t had a chance to diagram or get video of this drill. \u00a0If I get some time, I&#8217;ll try to get some video of it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Ball security \/ ballhandling \/ conditioning (15 min)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/drills\/multi-purpose-ball-handling.html\">Multi-purpose ballhandling drill<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Defense &#8211;
