Each year I try to refine our core values, which I believe are the foundation of our success and the most important aspect of my coaching.<\/p>\n

This year I was inspired to adjust them to be one or two words (max) after watching this video<\/a>. \u00a0It’s an excellent video by Brett Ledbetter<\/a> that I recommend you watch.<\/p>\n

I’m really happy with how things turned out and I think this is going to be more effective than what we have done in the past. \u00a0I have a vision in my head on how we will teach and emphasize these core values. \u00a0I think it’s going to work extremely well.<\/p>\n

Here are our core values and the document I have provided to all our players…<\/p>\n

Here are the core values for our team.<\/p>\n

Our core values and character skills are the number one priority for us…<\/p>\n

“Culture and Character are the most important things.\u00a0 It starts there.”
\n<\/i>– Brad Stevens, Former Butler and now Celtics Head Coach<\/i><\/p>\n

All of the best programs are built on character skills.\u00a0 We believe that focusing on these skills will give our team the best chance of success. And, even more important, they will give each player life lessons and tools to help them succeed outside of basketball.<\/p>\n

Coaches and players will focus on applying, developing, and living these values in every minute, every day, every practice, and every game.<\/p>\n

Here are the values that define our team…<\/p>\n

Hard Working<\/b><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Always give your best effort.<\/li>\n
  • Do more than what is expected of you.<\/li>\n
  • Be passionate – do not be lukewarm, commit to excellence.<\/li>\n
  • Be enthusiastic – your energy and enjoyment, drive and dedication will stimulate and inspire others.<\/li>\n
  • Prepare (sharpen the saw) – prepare yourself and enhance your skills every day.<\/li>\n
  • Be proactive – don’t sit back, take the initiate and get things done.<\/li>\n
  • Focus – maintain an exceedingly high level of concentration and intense focus on your work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Selfless<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Work together and help each other.<\/li>\n
    • Look to help others in your life, with nothing expected in return.<\/li>\n
    • Develop strong relationships, friendships, and respect for others.<\/li>\n
    • Show unity – do not divide our house, team first.<\/li>\n
    • Make teammates better, lead by giving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      \u00a0<\/b>Honest<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

        \n
      • Be honest and trustworthy.<\/li>\n
      • Be someone that can be trusted and always relied upon.<\/li>\n
      • Show integrity and character in everything you do.<\/li>\n
      • Be responsible.<\/li>\n
      • Look people in the eye when communicating.<\/li>\n
      • Be a role model off the floor \u2013 look the part.<\/li>\n
      • Do all you have agreed to do.\u00a0 If you commit to something or say you are going to do something, see it through.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Resilient<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

          \n
        • Never give up and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.<\/li>\n
        • In order to succeed, you must first be willing to fail.<\/li>\n
        • Play through mistakes!\u00a0 Do not pout, complain, or drop your head when you make mistakes.<\/li>\n
        • Play through referee\u2019s calls.<\/li>\n
        • Never quit on a play! Never!!<\/li>\n
        • Use mistakes and failures to improve instead of using them as excuses.<\/li>\n
        • Stay the course.\u00a0 When thwarted try again; harder; smarter.<\/li>\n
        • Persevere relentlessly!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          \u00a0<\/b>Caring<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

            \n
          • Be caring and thoughtful in everything you do.<\/li>\n
          • Show kindness.<\/li>\n
          • Be respectful.<\/li>\n
          • Be loyal.<\/li>\n
          • Be thoughtful.<\/li>\n
          • Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.<\/li>\n
          • Make friendship a fine art.\u00a0 Be a great friend.<\/li>\n
          • Being kind is more important than being right.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Positive<\/b><\/p>\n

              \n
            • Maintain a positive attitude in practice, games, and all aspects of your life.<\/li>\n
            • Your attitude is what defines you.\u00a0 Your attitude affects you and the people around you.<\/li>\n
            • Spend most of your time thinking about the positive things you are doing, versus dwelling on the negative ones (mistakes).<\/li>\n
            • No hanging your head.\u00a0 Avoid negative thoughts and defeatist thinking.<\/li>\n
            • Have a very high frustration tolerance.<\/li>\n
            • Don’t become discouraged at temporary setbacks.<\/li>\n
            • Strive to have a positive and proactive attitude in everything you do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Grateful<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

                \n
              • Be grateful and thankful for what you have.\u00a0 Not everyone gets this opportunity.<\/li>\n
              • Be appreciative.<\/li>\n
              • Show gratitude. Be aware of people around you that go out of their way to help you.\u00a0 Say thank you.<\/li>\n
              • Enjoy practices and the process.\u00a0 Enjoy the improvement.<\/li>\n
              • Focus on the things you are good at.<\/li>\n
              • Enjoy the process and focus your energy on the positive things (give thanks).<\/li>\n
              • Have an attitude of gratitude \u2013 say \u201cThank You\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                If you can embrace these core values, you will achieve success and happiness.<\/p>\n

                Just remember… success is a journey, not a destination.<\/p>\n
