{"id":271,"date":"2014-02-11T14:06:55","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T20:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/?p=271"},"modified":"2016-10-21T09:49:00","modified_gmt":"2016-10-21T14:49:00","slug":"8-components-of-good-motion-offense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/8-components-of-good-motion-offense","title":{"rendered":"8 Components of Good Motion Offense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I want to share something that I &#8220;rediscovered&#8221; this season.<\/p>\n<p>After every game or scrimmage, ask yourself the following 8 questions about your half court offense&#8230;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Do we have good spacing?<\/li>\n<li>Do we have good ball movement\/reversals?<\/li>\n<li>Do we have good player movement (cuts, screens, fades, etc)?<\/li>\n<li>Are we getting the ball inside (via dribble and\/or pass)?<\/li>\n<li>Are we taking care of the ball?<\/li>\n<li>Are we taking good shots?<\/li>\n<li>Are we getting offensive rebounds and weakside position?<\/li>\n<li>Are we executing offensive fundamentals (setting screens, protecting the ball, driving to the basket, cutting, reading the defense, posting up, etc, etc)?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>When you think about it, that&#8217;s all there is to offense.\u00a0 Regardless of what motion offense you run, that&#8217;s all you can do on offense.<\/p>\n<p>In the past I have used these questions as reminders to keep our offense SHARP.\u00a0 However with some luck and success over the last couple years I have slipped&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I stopped asking those 8 questions last season.\u00a0 Frankly, in the last couple years we had enough talent and skill that I didn&#8217;t need to ask those questions to win games.\u00a0 I became complacent.\u00a0 And it hurt us this season!<\/p>\n<p>Over half way through this season I realized that we severely lacked ball movement and ball reversals.<\/p>\n<p>We did everything else.\u00a0 And we were getting the ball inside constantly (35+ shots in the paint per game).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a subtle thing. But we were taking tough shots and shooting a low percentage.\u00a0 We can get better shots and do a better job of loosening up the defense.<\/p>\n<p>Once I realized that the ball was sticking way too much.\u00a0 And we needed a lot more ball movement and ball reversals&#8230; we made the adjustments and our offensive efficiency improved significantly.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, I wonder&#8230;.\u00a0 why didn&#8217;t I not see this sooner??!!<\/p>\n<p>I still can&#8217;t believe I let it go for that long.<\/p>\n<p>Lesson learned.\u00a0 From now on, I will ask those 8 questions and reflect at least once every week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Motion Offense Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want to learn more about motion offense, I highly recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/pr\/kelbick-motion-dvds.html\">Don Kelbick Motion Offense DVDs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I want to share something that I &#8220;rediscovered&#8221; this season.
