{"id":1118,"date":"2016-09-23T06:47:15","date_gmt":"2016-09-23T11:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/?p=1118"},"modified":"2016-10-21T09:36:32","modified_gmt":"2016-10-21T14:36:32","slug":"15-basketball-tryout-drills-for-efficiently-evaluating-players","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/15-basketball-tryout-drills-for-efficiently-evaluating-players","title":{"rendered":"15 Basketball Tryout Drills for Efficiently Evaluating Players"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When conducting tryouts, you want drills that allow you to efficiently evaluate players.<\/p>\n<p>The key word here is \u201cefficiently\u201d.\u00a0 You only have so much time in tryouts to evaluate players.\u00a0 So you want to make good use of your time!<\/p>\n<p>Tryout drills should be fairly simple\u00a0yet similar to what you normally do in practice. \u00a0If drills are too complicated, you&#8217;ll waste hours of time teaching new players &#8220;how to run&#8221; the drills. \u00a0So simplicity is critical when choosing.<\/p>\n<p>Drills\u00a0should also accommodate varying degrees of ability and experience \u2013 since you\u2019ll most likely get a wide variety of players at tryouts.\u00a0 Some players might be inexperienced yet have a lot of potential.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to exclude those players.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the tryout 15 drills that I like to use.\u00a0 They are simple and effective in regards to evaluating players for your team.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/circlepassing.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1119 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/circlepassing-288x300.png\" alt=\"circlepassing\" width=\"288\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/circlepassing-288x300.png 288w, https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/haefner\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/circlepassing.png 349w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/a><strong>Drill #1 &#8211; Learn Players&#8217; Names with Circle Passing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Depending on your situation, you may or may not want to use this drill.\u00a0 The main purpose is for me as a coach to learn the names of the players. \u00a0However there are other benefits. \u00a0You&#8217;ll find out which players\u00a0put effort into learning names of teammates and who actually uses their names in practice. \u00a0Players\u00a0also get to meet new potential teammates and begin the bonding process.<\/p>\n<p>To conduct the drill, players get in a circle (close enough to reach out and touch the person next to them).\u00a0 Instruct players to learn the name of the person standing on their left and their right.\u00a0 Then as the ball is passed, the player receiving the ball will say their own name, and the names of the players next to them.\u00a0 Then they pass to a different player.\u00a0 This repeats until someone knows the name of everyone there\u2026 it can be a player or a coach that recites the names of each player.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #2 &#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/play.asp?id=7934\"><strong>Full Court Dribbling and Finishing<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This simple drill gives you a good idea of a player&#8217;s all around dribbling skill and idea if they can make uncontested lay ups.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #3 &#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/play.asp?id=8012\"><strong>Full Court Dribble with Weave and Finish<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is very similar to the drill above except it adds a cone dribbling aspect that can be telling.\u00a0 Make sure they spread out so you can watch close. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a progression you can use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 ball dribble (no shot)<\/li>\n<li>Cross overs and then retreat at wing area<\/li>\n<li>Cross overs and then fan (lateral) dribble at wing area<\/li>\n<li>Behind back<\/li>\n<li>In\/out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Drill #4 &#8211; Form Shooting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even though this is an evaluation, I still want players to practice the &#8220;right away&#8221; and start with form shooting.\u00a0 This drill also allows you to evaluate who listens to instructions closely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #5 &#8211; 3 or 4 Player Shooting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Very simple drill that gets players a high number of reps. I usually start with mid-range shots for a few minutes.\u00a0 Then for older players I instruct them to move out to 3pt range.<\/p>\n<p>Drill instructions: \u00a02 balls and 3-4 players per basket. \u00a0Each player shoots and gets the rebound. As soon as Player A shoots, Player B shoots and repeats the process. Player A passes to B, B passes to C, C passes to A.\u00a0 Players get an average of 14 shots per minute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #6 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/play.asp?id=8013\">2 Person Full Court Passing<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Passing drill that is very quick and easy to set up for players new to your system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #7 &#8211; Pass and Cut Lay Ups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Really simple drill.\u00a0 Line on top of key and line at wing.\u00a0 Wing player has ball.\u00a0 Pass to top, cut, and receive a pass back for lay up.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll see who can pass to a player on the move and who can make lay ups.\u00a0 Also preps players for basic pass and cut offense when we scrimmage at end.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #8 &#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/play.asp?id=75\"><strong>Footwork Drill &#8211; Partner Pass and Pivot<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This drill gives you an idea of a player&#8217;s footwork skill.\u00a0\u00a0 I also like to use this drill before the next drill (3 on 2 no dribble).\u00a0 Because I can refer to the jump stops and pivots they are practicing now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #9 &#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/drills\/passing-and-decission-making-drill.html\"><strong>3 on 2 full Court &#8211; No Dribble<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gives you a good idea on who can pass the ball, pivot, and make good decisions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #10 &#8211; 1 v 1 full court <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Real simple.\u00a0 Check the ball and play 1v1 full court trying to score.\u00a0 Make sure players switch around going against different opponents.\u00a0 This really tells you who can defend, who can handle the ball, and how well players move.\u00a0 This is a very telling drill.<\/p>\n<p>To get more reps we use both side courts.\u00a0 After a possession, players go to other court (offense goes to defense) &#8212; so they are essentially rotating in a big circle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #11 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/play.asp?id=8014\">1v1 Speed Dribble<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shows you who can handle the ball at full speed, who can finish under pressure, who can run fast, and who is a competitor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #12 &#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/defense\/shell-drill-sucks.html\"><strong>Shell Drill<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We like to run the shell drill.\u00a0 This tells us right away if a player knows anything about defensive fundamentals.\u00a0 It also gives us an idea of who learns quickly and listens to instructions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #13 &#8211; Basic Offense<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Explain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/pr\/kelbick-motion-dvds.html\">our motion offense<\/a>: &#8220;we just want spacing and ball movement until you get a good shot.&#8221;\u00a0 Then practice a little 5 on 0 motion &#8212; \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/play.asp?id=7704\">5 v 0 pass and cut<\/a>, and 5 v 0 pass and screen (if time).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #14 &#8211; Speed and agility drills<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In some cases we have players race so we can compare their speed and agility.\u00a0 You can simply have them line up in rows and then race to end of gym, run shuttles, or use agility drills like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakthroughbasketball.com\/play.asp?id=8036\">lane agility test<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drill #15 &#8211; Scrimmage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the end of tryouts we let them play.\u00a0 Self explanatory.\u00a0 If we have a lot of players, we try to split them up on multiple courts.\u00a0 We also keep the games short&#8230; 5 min games or first to 5 points.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You probably won&#8217;t have time to use all 15 of these drills in one practice &#8212; but hopefully this gives you some ideas on drills you can use at your next tryouts.
