How would you stop a transition team? Dribble drive motion offense?

First of all, control the tempo... it is a lot easier to slow a team down than speed them up. Jam the rebounder, get to the out let man quickly and hustle back.

As for the dribble drive, I never played against it..... I retired before it came in vogue..... but here are my thoughts... get the ball to one side and try to keep it there... if they try to hand off, trap it.. have great helpside D and force them to beat you from the perimeter. JMO

On offense, control the tempo, no quick shots unless its a lay up or your GREAT 3 point shooter has a WIDE open look. Make them play defense. a lot of it, teams that like to break don't like to play D in long stretches... they end up taking bad shots when they do get the ball IF they aren't really disciplined.

I'm with Coach Sars, I too have not seen this dribble drive offense and I'm not retired. Does anyone have some information on it. Coach Mac

I've seen it used.... a lot of dribble penetration and kick out for 3s or takes - I for one don't like it but thats just me.

Here's an article about the dribble drive:
http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/offense/memphis-dribble-drive-motion-offense.html

If I were facing it, I would emphasize "anticipating the help". So my help defenders anticipate the drive, stop it almost before it happens, and anticipate the recovery. Because the dribble drive wants you to help. They want to get by their defender, force help and rotation, then kick and keep working it until you get a good shot or lay up.

I would also consider a sagging defense. So my 1-pass away defenders are sagging back a little (instead of denying).

For transition defense, that's something that most coaches don't practice enough. They get their teams tons of half court reps. But they don't practice stopping the ball in transition until they face a team that likes to run. I have seen some teams that deny the point guard full court to stop the other team from running. But for the most part I think you just practice transition defense all year.

I also forgot to mention something about transition defense. I think it depends on your team, their age, and what you're good at. For example, if emphasize offensive rebounding and had a great rebounding team, I'd have them all crash the offensive boards (except the point guard). If you beat the other team up on the boards, the coach will yell at their players to box out and they'll be so worried about securing the defensive rebound they almost forget about their running game. I've seen many teams get taken out of their transition offense when they face exceptional rebounding teams.

So I guess my point is that each situation is different and it depends on what you're good at.

Oh! I guess I expected something earth shattering about this offense, nothing new, you have a great slasher and driver beat your man read the help and rotation and kick outside for a clean shot. Ill stay with the Motion but thanks for you help gentlemen. You too Coach Sars. Coach Mac. PS still have not gotten the Bigalow DVD. Oh Well, TIC. (this Is China)

With all the years you have been in the game Mac - do you really think that there is something NEW that would surprise us? Other than some rule they decide to throw in for whatever reason.
