Post subject:  Chair Drills

I bought Don's Attack and Counter DVD and watched it a few times. I have also read the ebook. I took a group of girl's to Don's shooting camp at Spooky Nook Complex in Lancater, PA in August. I enjoyed the many different drills he did. Let me get to my questions.

1- We are getting ready to begin Shooting Workouts October 4th for our high school girls team. These workouts will be for two hours on Sunday's only leading up to the season. Would you recommend using the chair drills which would be very new to the girls and something they probably wouldn't be able to continue during the season? Or would it be better to create workouts with the same type of shots without the chairs and players doing the passing?

2. I obviously lack the expertise that Don does so I am not sure I can implement all the little things with the chair drills to make it as effective. I can set the chairs up and go over the chair rules, and run the drills like he does. Do you feel this is good enough to help the girls with their footwork, consistency, etc.?

3. Lastly, I know it's always inside foot as close to the chair as possible when you scoop the ball from the chair. When I watch the video it appears to me at times the players "travel" when taking the ball off the chair. Is the 1-2 step after scooping the ball not a travel?

I hope these questions make sense.

Thanks,
CoachC

Coach -

Here are my thoughts on your questions...

1 - I think either way works just fine. With my teams (same age, gender, and similar ability), I have players passing the ball for the shooting drills. When I do workouts with a variety of age levels and ability, I use chairs. I know other coaches that use chairs in both situations.

2 - I don't think you'll have any problem with this. Just emphasis the rules as explained in the DVDs and ebooks. Be confident what you are doing it right. Then as you get experience and learn, you will get better. God knows I had no idea what I was doing when I started. But I was dedicated and show confidence (even when I wasn't confident). The players and everything turned out just fine!

3 - I think you'll get lots of different opinions on this depending on who you ask. Since you never actually pick a ball up off a chair in a game, I'm not sure you can truly determine if it's a travel or not. I really don't worry about it. I just let things work out on their own. As long as they have good footwork and shoot the same every time, everything else just works out. After 4 years it's never been an issue for me.

I think that Jeff's answers are pretty much on point.

However, I think you might be focusing to much on the manutia and not enough on the big picture. You have been to camp so I think that you have seen the results that keeping your eye on the "big picture" can produce.

I can make some deeper comments but I think they would spur additional questions. If you would contact me by email, Don@Kelbick.com, we can talk and have a more extended conversation to allay your fears and answer your questions.
