Hi Coach Huber,
Telling shooters to release the ball "on the way up" is very vagiue. I was taught to release the ball at or near the top of your jump, Never on the way down! Teaching players to release the ball on the way up gives me problems. Do you let the arm motion decide the release point? Obviously, how high a shooter jumps may also determine the release point as well as the shooter's quickness of release. I would appreciate your thoughts on this aspect of jump shooting! My opinion. I would agree that you want to avoid shooting on the way down. Whether you shoot on the way up or right before you hit the apex of your jump, I think is a minor detail that you let the player decide in most cases. Let them do what seems natural and comfortable to them.
