Practice your skills between now and then. In the tryout, be the first player in line for each drill. Hustle during, between, and after drills. Work as hard as you can. Dive on the floor for loose balls. Rebound. Stand out from everyone else by being the hardest working player out there. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, but at the same time, when you are in games, value the basketball by not committing a lot of turnovers. http://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/players/10-basketball-tips-playing-time.html |

To add to what Jeff said, COMMUNICATE!! I was working a recent tryout and there was this 5th grade player that would loudly yell "screen!" "Shot!". It may have sounded a little funny, but you know what, he sure got our attention. Even though, there were 4 other games going on, we could hear him from across the court. And we liked the fact that he talked so much. I don't remember 75% of the kids, but I sure remember him and that's the half the battle for kids is getting remembered. |

Great points by Jeff & Joe - I helped a friend with his 7th grade team and the smallest kid on the court - 5 feet nothing was all over the floor for loose balls.... after we taught him how to take a charge, he led the team in that area.... he tried to block a couple of shots in practice, I asked him when he thought he was going to do that in a game.... he said,, guess never... next game he had two blocks... I told him that I wouldn't say that to him again. Diving on loose balls, taking charges are game changers and will certainly get a coaches attention.... Rebound, make good passes, defend well.... all of these things are important... of course being a good shooter wont hurt either. :-) Good luck |
