Post subject:  Court Terminology Question

There are 2 concentric circles on "some" basketball courts where tip-off occurs. Does anyone know why there are 2. Is there a purpose to either of the circles? In my local gym there is only a large circle and I noticed in another gym that they had both a large and a small. The large at approx 6' in diameter and the small at approx 4' in diameter.

Thanks in advance for any info anyone may have!

Terminology might be mixed up a bit, but the outer circle is usually called the restraining circle. All players that aren't the jumpers must stay on the outside of the larger circle until the ball is tapped. The inner circle I call the jumping circle, don't know if that's the right terminology. I believe one foot of each jumper has to be in the jumping circle prior to the tap. I never ran across anyone enforcing this at lower levels or high school though.

Hope this helps! Good Q.

That makes perfect sense to me now. I'm not so concerned with the terminology as much as I am the purpose so that is great! Thanks so much for the answer Rob.
