Coaches we now have our 4th grade championship game Saturday and the team we play plays a 1-3-1 half court defense! Was looking for ideas on how to attack that defense! Our strength is our point guard !

All the same zone offensive concepts apply. The biggest difference with a 1-3-1 is that sometimes they make it more difficult to reverse the ball and you need to go about thing differently. In order to keep reversing the ball and forcing the zone to shift you can do things like...

- get the ball inside and have the post player look opposite for the reversal (good idea against any zone)

- use pitch backs to reverse the ball (have the player with the ball attack the wing or top defenders, then once the commit another player cuts behind for the pitch back and uses the dribble to reverse the ball

- keep one of the guards behind the ball and close to the middle to make it easier for the reversal

- use the back up dribble and good ballhandling skills to create good passing angles

- start in a 1-4 set (distorts all zones) to get the ball entered and then attack

Constantly distort the zone, force them to make adjustments, and then attack the openings.

Did you ever get enough info about attacking the 1-3-1 Defense? I used to struggle also, but have found an offensive set that works well if you still need help with it.

Here is something that we did when we experienced a lot of touble reversing the ball ..... we stepped our high post player out and he helped us reverse the ball.
