Hey guys I love the board I am picking up so much just by reading the new and old posts. Just looked at the posts on “Coach being stubborn” and it made me feel much better to know that I am not alone and in very esteemed company :-)

We are getting ready to end our season, and while everything is fresh I am taking a little time to sketch out a few things for next year and then hopefully set it aside until May when we start open gyms. Aside from the fundamental basketball concerns, conditioning of our young ladies is important to me. If we get beat on skills, I can work on that during practice and once the season begins, conditioning will be done through basketball drills at practice.

What I am interested in is conditioning drills or activities for preseason conditioning. I do not want it to be too boring or the same old thing my coaches did everyday (push ups, sprints, jumping jacks etc…)

Aside from general fitness, increasing their speed, agility, and vertical leap are areas I know we need to work on.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

C'mon Dave - Coaches being stubborn? I resemble that remark LOL

Do you have a strength coach at your school? That might be a start... I never had one and I always felt that I was good enough at getting my kids in shape through my practices. I think that IF I had it to do all over again I would do some plyometrics ( I didn't know enough about it and still don't ) That should help your jumping ability.

I was more interested in quickness and agility... lane slides... X out drills with a ball...... I'm trying to remember one drill we did... slide from the corner to the elbow... dive across (loose ball simulation) get up and close out to the sideline.
Jump rope - jump over lines back and forth / foot quickness

I'm sure you will get more information from Jeff, Joe and Don Kelbick if Don is around now. (along with some of the other good coaches here)

Coach Sar,

Thanks for the tips. We are group of homeschoolers so we dont have some of the typical school assets (weight rooms, strength coaches etc..) so we are relying on volunteers and lots of asking questions.

We got beat by teams that were quicker and better on the boards (I swear that some of my kids had cement shoes on during the games.) So quickness and getting up for rebounds are two areas I want to specifically improve on, but I know that conditioing is a whole body thing and you can not "spot" condition.

My wife uses plyometrics with our volleyball teams so I can ask her for help with that one.

Dave -

Talk to the coaches at your local high school for tips... see if they have a strength coach ... pick their brains for something that you can do in your situation. Who knows, IF you can build a good enough relationship, they might let you use their resources ???

Sounds like your kids are going to have to do yeomans work when it comes to boxing out... positioning is half the battle and desire is half and the other half is haha .... sound like Yogi Berra

Good luck, you have a tough gig. You might want to borrow the smoke an mirrors that I used.

Yogi is alive and well here...I have a meeting this afternoon with a local AAU program I'll talk to them and see where it takes me
