Please help, I just started coaching youth (4th-5th) basketball last year and I'm entering my second year. I have relied heavily on your site and found it to be a God's send. My main problem right now is that I have a player from last years team on my current roster and he has a problem with double dribbling. He'll go a thousand miles an hour, and pull up his dribble and take two-three steps after pulling up. His shot has gotten much better from last year and its apparent he's been working on certain aspects of his game but this is something I can't seem to fix. I've tried to get him to slow down, I've tried working on a jump stop and tried working on his foot work. He's very stubborn but I think he wants to get better. Can you recommend any drills to help correct this. Thanks so much for all you do.

I've read this a few times know and asked myself what I would do.... remember, he is young... they will make mistakes... he sounds very aggressive which is a good thing.... now you have to SELL him on the idea that this is one area he needs to correct, until you do that, you can drill him forever.

You might show him some tapes, films etc.... you can find all kinds of things on you tube....

You need to convince him that the best dribblers are not necessarily the fastest ones... they are the ones that can control the ball and their bodies .... a change of pace and a good crossover dribble are the ball handlers best friend.

You might try some dribbling drills where your players have to use a change of pace, crossover dribble and on your whistle, come to a jump stop..... or full court dribble, using very moves... and come to a jump stop at the free throw lines and at half court and end line. each time... have them go into a triple threat.... add a shot fake and / or pass fake too.

Good luck, Let us know how this goes.
