Hi, can you let me know at what age youth can shoot with proper technique (without having to "heave" the ball to shoot, but with correct shooting technique and form - shooting hand, guide hand, backspin, follow through, etc) ?

It all depends on the size, natural strength, maturity level, and gender of that individual player. And it depends on the distance they are shooting from too. For an early bloomer, it might be 11 years old. For a late bloomer it might be 15 years old.

With that said, most players are strong enough to shooting with good technique after they hit puberty and they are almost done growing (maybe have a couple inches left at most). But again, it depends on gender and distance they are shooting from the basket.

The only way to know is by watching the player (maybe even filming in slow motion). Have them start shooting 5 feet from the basket and slowly move further out. Take a few shots and then take a small step back. Repeat. Once their form starts getting messy, you know the limit of their shooting range.

With younger kids, you can use a small (light weight basketball) and a lower hoop to get them shooting with proper technique. If you use the proper weight and height and distance, they can use proper technique as early as 5 years old. But the is essentially a nerf ball with a plastic 6 ft hoop.
