Hi, need a little help. I preface this by saying that I know there is no magic drill that will help and its not something that can be fixed overnight. I understand that completely.

I have a player on my 10 year old boys team. He is just not comfortable with the ball in his hands during games. He usually travels, double dribbles, and his shots generally get blocked. He just doesn't seem to know what to do with the ball when he gets it and he panics.

What can I do to help him out? What drills can I use that will help this short term (since our season is coming to a close in a few weeks)? We do plenty of ball handling, small sided games and breakdown our motion offense into pieces in drills. I just want to help him gain some confidence to end the season. Again, I know there is no miracle cure.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That's a tough one to answer since you have limited time and you're dealing with a pretty complex skill in terms of sports. In the short term (without disrupting practice) is have him play some 1 v 1 or 3 v 3. 1v1 would be better with a teammate who's at similar skill level. You could coach him through during the 1v1. Could even offer him coming earlier to practice or something. You could give him one tip on each of the points (double dribble, shot blocked and traveling).

In the longer term, he needs to practice on his own. There are tons of solo ball handling drills out on YouTube for younger players. You could even incorporate some of those in your next practices, but like you said, there's really no miracle drill.

Some simple jump stop or just stop, pivot and pass drills could help

You could suggest some solo drills for him and also if there are any camps for beginners in your area, maybe suggest that to the parents.

Hope this helps some.
