Just wondering what other's experiences were with respect to learning to play with your back to the basket.

My son has been going to clinic playing rec/cyo and now travel/cyo since he was 5..he has always been the biggest guy on the floor (he's 12 5'9" about 180lbs). It seems like all they ever learned to in practice/clinic and camps is mainly dribble, I realize dribbling is an important skill, but it seems like he's on his own learning to play in the post. I've been helping him as much as I can, but I never really played basketball above 8th grade, and I was terrible LOL.

It just seems like noone around here knows how to coach any post game, except for yelling "turn around and shoot" when they feed it to him. I've started him out doing the "chair" drill with the inside drop step, right into a layup because it seems like it has the least moving parts. He developed a little floater when drop stepping outside that he makes at about a 75 percent clip, so rather than bog him down with a ton of moves, going to leave it at those 2, and a pull up jumber. .

I think all kids should practice "footwork" that can be used in the post, perimeter, protecting the ball, and so on. The footwork includes front pivot, reverse, drop step, sweep, and step through. Players should be comfortable using all those pivots and combining them.

I also think all kids should have "a little" experience catching the ball with their back to the basket. Basically players should be exposed to all positions. That is why we run 5 out motion with youth teams so positions are interchangeable and everyone has "post up" opportunities via the 5 out.

Flex is another offense with interchangeable positions.

The footwork and how it applies to the game is taught in detail on the Attack and Counter DVDs and at the camps.
