i am taking over a high school basketball team that plays in a small gym (the 3 point line meets the sideline at the foul shot line extended) and is an undersized team. The pluses are our kids are fit and very smart. what coaching resources would your recommend i purchase for summer study and implementation in the fall?

The resources really depends on what your specific situation and needs.

What will you hand your hat on? What will you be great at? Pick a couple things to be great at and study up in those areas.

Here's any article that might help you define your philosophy for winning and molding players. Once you figure that out maybe send us another note and maybe we can point you to some good resources.
