I'm a coach and a parent of a player(s). I've been coaching youth sports for a little over 20 years and just recently middle school players and more thank likely H.S. players in my near future. The question I always ask myself, that you could probably help answer; "What is a well-rounded, well-built training session?"

Is the "training session" a team practice? How many players? How long is the session?

It’s a team practice. 10 players.

For me, top priorities are (in this order):
- character development
- player development
- prepare them for high school
- win

With that in mind, we try to cover all the following aspects of player development:

- PG skills for all players (dribble, moves, retreat, creating space, eyes up, passing off dribble, etc)
- Passing skills
- Pivoting skills
- Post footwork skills along with hook shot
- Lay ups
- A few slight more advanced finished moves (if they are ready)
- Man to man defense (all the fundamental aspects)
- Offensive and defensive rebounding
- Shooting technique
- Shooting off the catch in their range
- Shooting of the dribble
- From triple threat -- catch and rip, fake rip, shot fake
- Universal offensive concepts (we use motion to teach)... spacing, getting open, seeing and getting into space, reversals, fakes against zone, gaps against zone, cutting, posting, screening

If they are really strong in the areas I listed above, they can adapt to any type of offense or defense at the high school level. And they will have foundational skills to thrive.

For the winning parts, I forgot to mention, we focus on:

- a couple really good BLOB plays
- BLOB defense
- half court and maybe full court man defense
- motion offense
- player development
- rebounding
- working hard... effort

By getting good at these areas we can win some games and it fits into our player development philosophy where virtually the entire practice is spent on player development (except for BLOB plays... but we do teach some during that time about screening and other concepts).
