Just wondering if anyone knows the stats. What is the avg. points scored per possession in high school basketball and how much does it go up when you get into the bonus?

When I was in high school my coach quoted us some stats. If I remember right, he said it goes up a full point per possession, but he could have been making that up for all I know.

Anyone know where I can find this type of information?

Barry Adams tracked points per possession with his teams. He said that his goal was to keep his teams under 0.90 and his good teams usually averaged 1.04 to 1.11 on offense.

I believe your coach may have been exagerrating, unless his teams were horrible offensive teams, yet great free throw shooters which is usually contradictory.

I am not a big fan of statistics but points per possession can be a very valuable tool when evaluating offensive efficiency.

Making the difference of a point per game might be possible but with a statistic in which a 0.2 difference is large, a full point is really huge.

I think what might be important here is the sample size. Over a period of 4 to 5 games, you might see it but the more games you include the less of a chance you might see such a large difference.

Another variable that has to be accounted for is the amount of time you spend in the penalty. If you spend 15 minutes per half in the bonus you will have a larger differential than if you spend 3 minutes. The more possessions you have, the more times you have to score. If yo spend 3 minutes in the penalty and don't score, your PPP will go down.

So, is it possible? Yes. Is it probable? Probably not. But in any case, remember there are 3 types of people in this world, liars, damned liars and statisticians.
