Any recommendations for getting a team over being intimidated by another team? Our players play against most teams with aggressiveness and confidence but there is one team, a rival team in our city, that no matter if they are playing against them in school or an AAU team they just stop trying to compete. When we started this program 4 years ago, they smoked us but every season we've gotten closer and closer. We want to get them over this obstacle this season and believe they can but how do we get them to believe that?

Just to be clear, we've tried the following. We've tried being very encouraging and expressing to them to control only what they can control and not to compare themselves to other teams or players. We've tried making our practices very competitive and fundamentally sound. We've talked about why it's important to work hard on themselves and their game and to use their gifts to help their team and teammates for success. We are currently doing the Steve Nash High Fives and running one team building event a month for parents and player.

I think it's a process of building confidence. Persistence and hard work is the only thing I know that works. Sometimes a little luck helps... hitting a few baskets to get momentum. It usually takes time or you have things go your way and then players realize they can do it. Hang in there!
