I have a 8th grade team with 16 kids. Our school season is 1 team and I have to get everyone on the floor during the game according to school rules. After our school season we do tournaments that are not school affiliated. I want to split the boys into 2 teams. How do I do this? Put the better players on one team or split them up equally? |

If it's me in 8th grade, I split them up in two teams... A and B... or whatever you want to call it. I put each team in appropriate competition games. I know around here there is a big difference in the competition you see depending on the tournaments you join and the competition level you choose. I might also give each player a report card / evaluation so they know what they can improve on if they want to make the A team next year. |

What is your advise on selling this to the kids/parents on the Splitting to A B teams? |

I can't say I have experience with this specific situation. If I were, I probably wouldn't do much selling. I would simply state we are splitting teams into two groups based on skill level, aggressiveness, and experience. We will then schedule games giving each team and player matched up against the appropriate competition level. Be upfront with them. Then they can decide if they want to sign up or not. I think as long as you're upfront with people, things will be fine. Maybe others have more experience with this situation but those are my thoughts. I see plenty of club teams that have elite, competitive, etc teams. You try out and the club director is responsible for placing players on the appropriate team. Parents should be somewhat familiar with this practice. |

Do the tournaments have different competitive levels (i.e., bronze, silver, gold)? Who usually plays in the tournaments in terms of teams? Are these club teams? Rec teams? In other words, what's the normal route most of these teams come together? If the tournaments have different competitive levels and most teams hold tryouts to form teams, I'd use that as a selling point to the parents. You could also use the selling point that these kids will be trying out next year for the high school team. |
