You need spacing and poise to break any press.

Spread the floor for spacing.

Also, poise, which I tell my players is "calm under pressure".
They must be patient because 10 seconds is actually a long time to
to get the ball past half court. They can not panic!

With an "odd front" press like a 1-3-1 you would want to place two guards spread apart at front, one big man in middle (finding an open space) and your last 2 players will mirror your front two by spreading across from each other at the back end of the press. So basically you use a 2-1-2 spread set-up against a 1-3-1 press.

Run through this during practices. Even throw in an extra player on defense just to create havoc and get your players used to double-teaming and traps.

Tell your guards to pass BEFORE the trap which will be on sidelines around half court. That is where defense will try to trap you.
Guards should look to pass to middle guy or downcourt, strong side.
Fast crisp passing...no floaters!!

If middle man catches ball, he/she should spin and look opposite side
for player at back end of press.

Lastly, I always tell my players to attack a press. When we break it we push and attack the rim while other team is spread all over floor.
Punish them for pressing you!! That's what I tell my players..

Good Luck,

Coach A

I cannot support the words"Don't panic" more. I coach a younger team 14-15 yr olds and for the first half of the year, no matter what I or my assistant did in practice, no matter how many times we worked on it (anywhere from 15 min to an hour) during practice come game time, my players panicked. Our play was good, practiced well even against our own Sr Boys team. But come league teams, we panicked.

I dont know where I got this from but we changed the phrase "Press Defence" to Press Attack. We were sitting back waiting for their press scared to turn it over, rather than attacking them. After a couple practices and during the first two games we used the phrase change, we didn't turn over the ball once and both opposing teams called off their press.

I remember my first few games as the Head coach of a varsity team at the high school level. I took the blame for not handling the press well. We called our attack our PRESS OFFENSE. We worked on it every day for 15 minutes... some times we added a 6th defender.

I told them NOT to worry about a 10 second call, I will never yell at you for that... just don't throw the ball away - we can play D when they take the ball out of bounds... we cant defend break away dunks.

Make your practices harder than any games... our kids got to the point when someone pressed us they smiled..... even my poorer teams. Don't worry about a turnover, they happen and its part of the game.
