7th Grade Boys - looking for a continuity offense to run, we have some good posts and a couple of decent gaurds. We usually run motion with a couple of set plays. I've noticed teams running 4 out 1 in more lately. Example: In this video, what determines the movement, cutting, screening, etc.? Is the main purpose to feed the post or pass to the open cutter or hit the open outside shot?

Is this a good offense for man to man or for zone? I would think for man.

Thanks.

The links to the example did not work. So I wasn't able to look at that.

But here are some responses to your questions...

- I really like motion offense for this age. Continuity is fine but you better be really good at teaching it and be prepared to spend a lot of practice time getting players to memorize the patterns. And once they get in games it will all fall apart, even if it looks good in practice. That's just how it is... patterns and continuities take quite a bit of time to get comfortable in games. That is one of the bigger reasons I like motion, I want to spend most of my time in practice developing skills and teaching universal concepts, not teaching them to memorize patterns or plays. WIth that said, if I did run a a contunuity at that age, I'd probably run this flex offense: https://www.breakthroughbasketball.com/pr/hybrid-flex.html

This is good for development because all players get to play in all positions and it's also an effective offense.

- 4 out 1 in motion can be good too. But be sure you rotate your post players. You don't want to pigeonhole your biggest players into the post... the should be playing on perimeter too so they develop. Not only do bigs need to develop guard skills too... but your biggest player now might end up being one of the shorter players when they get to varsity. I remember I was 4-8 in 7th grade. The biggest player was about almost 6-0. Fast forward to senior year, I ended up taller than him at 6-1.

Here's an example of rules for a 41 motion, however you'd want to simplify with 7th graders quite a bit:

- With small adjustments, the 5 out and 4 out motion offense can be run against man or zone defense.

BTW, sometimes when I have more than 1 good post players, I run 5 out motion and allow them to post up temporary when they cut in the lane. Or whoever has the best match up looks for temporary post up opportunities while running a 5 out motion. That worked well for me.
