I purchased Don Kelbick's transition offense-4 second fastbreak DVD and thought it was very good! I'm having a hard time convincing our coaching staff that getting the ball in the corner is a great option. They are concerned with getting caught in the corner by the trap. How would you sell this tactic to your coaching staff?

Thanks!

Coach - Getting trapped in the corner can be a problem if your played catches there and holds it. Otherwise there is no way the defense can get two defenders to the corner and trap in 4 seconds Otherwise they are leaving a lot of openings near the basket.

If you run the transition mostly right, you put a ton of pressure on the defense. They are just trying to figure out who to guard, how to protect the basket, etc. Trapping is the last thing on their mind.

Now if you go half speed, you're not gonna get the ball in the corner anyway.

I have run this transition for several years and I have only been trapped in the corner 3 or 4 times (out of thousands of possessions). The reason we were trapped is because I had an indecisive player in the corner that just held the ball. They didn't pass, dribble, or continue the offense like that are supposed to.

You could just try it to prove it's not a problem. Teach 5 guys to run the transition. Then ask 5 defenders to play them and try to trap. You could scrimmage or do the 5on4+1 drill to better simulate a game.

It all makes sense! How important is the ball in the corner vs the wing?

Thanks

I have not tried that so I'm not sure how pushing to the wing would work until trying. My first reaction would be that it puts less pressure on the defense. And part of Don's theory is that if you get it to the corner it flattens out the defense immediately in transition. You may lose some trailer opportunities, etc. You might just have to try it both ways to see what happens.

We do sometimes accidentally catch on the wing. I don't remember us getting much in transition when that happens but it's hard to remember.

One thing I am planning to work on is that skip pass from the corner to the wing on the opposite side of the floor.

I think the having defense gearing towards one side of the court, then has to reverse back will give us opportunities with the defense in transition.

Chaos is good! LOL

Jeff,

My 9th grade girl's AAU team had our first practice yesterday where we introduced our fastbreak. I use most of Don Kelbick's principles with a few minor adjustments. The concept of having a trailer and best use of my personnel is where i have to make a decision and would like your help. My 5 is my fastest player which I also have inbounding the basketball, her responsibility is to sprint the middle of the floor and post up ballside. My 4 sprints the opposite lane line that the 1 takes. I like my 5 inbounding the ball because she is generally closest to the basket, but that also makes her the last player down the floor on a make. Who should be the trailer (4 or 5) and what rules should be implemented, e.g., stay one step behind the ballhandler.

Thank you

Ideally your inbounder is a good shooter because they will be open for outside shots as a trailer. But not all of us have personnel that fits how we want. So you might have to adjust.

If you want your 5 to both inbound the ball and run to the block, you'll just have to experiment. I have never tried that.

I think as long as you keep good spacing and players can get good passing angles, it doesn't matter too much. If you try the 5 inbounding and posting, I might have the 5 run weakside lane and then diagonal cut into the post. I'm not sure I'd have them run behind the PG. Maybe have the 5 rub off of 4 when running to the block. Might either get themselves open of get 4 open by dragging their defender. I have no idea how that would work without trying. Again I think you'll have to experiment as I have never tried that.

Hopefully you're opponents don't make very many shots and you don't have to worry about it. :)

I like the rub strategy! So, on a miss, do you have a specific trailer with rules? My other thought was that maybe I won't worry about someone trailing behind the ball handler and just keep emphasizing sprinting to your spot.

Thank you

On misses I have done this one of two different ways...

1) In the past I have assigned numbers for players to sprint to spots. 2 always sprint to right corner, 4 always sprints to left wing, etc.

2) This past year I specified 5 to run to the block. Then closest player filled right corner. Whoever is closest to left corner filled that spot. Whoever is left fills trailer spots.

There are pros and cons to each method. I don't think one way is better than the other. Both methods require practice and is just a matter of the coaches preference.
