Hello everyone,

My teams' Achilles heel for years has been attacking good pressure zone defenses. Especially defenses that take away my point guard's first pass and trap both the dribble and pass to the sideline. What's the best and simplest way to attack half court zone pressure? I'm trying to decide between hitting the high post and going back door from there, using ball screens, or splitting the trappers with passes to back door cutters. I have to choose one that will be most effective and simple to drill and teach. My team is a 14U team and we only practice once a week. I have good ball handlers but they're over dribbling in these situations and burying their heads leading to tons of turnovers. Let me know.

Not being able to see exactly what they are doing... usually IF you can get the ball into the high post and your wings running a back door.... that should open up things for you.

I used to tell my players to split the defender who was coming over to trap.... make contact with his inside shoulder and let the ref make the call. That might be hard to do IF his dribble is already live..... if he hasn't usd the dribble (wing player) he should be able to do that.

Best options..... hit the high post - wings go to the block and the high post can pass to one of them or just take his defender to the hole. Tell them to not panic.... take the 5 second call before you make a bad pass,

Here are several images of breaking the half court trap.

For press breaker I keep it real simple with this.

For zone offense I think putting them in gaps and just letting them play is the way to go. It takes time but based on what you described it sounds like these players need fundamental development. You said they are good ballhandlers but put their head down and make bad decisions. I would focus on solving this problem instead of trying to create a scheme that solves the problem. Your players will be better of in the long run if you try to help them develop instead of making better "plays".

When it comes to it, players should be able to just keep good spacing and "play". If they make bad decisions I would work on that. It might start with developing enough ball skill to dribble with their head up. Maybe their ballhandling still needs to improve so they have the confidence to dribble with their head up in games?

From there you focus on spacing and decision making. You can use a mix of 1on1, 1on2, 2on1, 2on2, 3on3 type of drills for this. Pick up Brian McCormicks Basketball Intelligence ebook and it will give you a bunch of good drills to help your players improve decision making, spacing, and ball skills.

It sounds like you're running into a 3-2 half court press, very effective. I solved it with the old adage of, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em", so we developed a 3-2 half court press in 6th grade. By executing the press, it helped my players understand how to beat the press.
