Post subject:  Practice and Games With Young Players

Hello Coaches,

I'm coaching young players for more than 15 years and I never saw something like this with my team and my players to lose all the games! We're on the half of season and our big competition will start after All African Games(Maputo)Mozambique. So i would like to hear from you some kind of help about specifically work that I need to do with my players, how to improve the fundamentals of basketball game during the practice? How to put motivation on this kids again? I work with boys and girls from age 14 to 19. Maybe I'm not doing my home work well with the kids during the practice.Thank you for your attention.

Coach Ernesto from AEROPORTO TEAM - Maputo, Mozambique.

Since we cant see what your players are doing of how they are playing this is going to be pretty tough.

First of all, dedicate a lot of your time on the fundamentals of the game - sound fundamental teams usually fare pretty well in game situations.

Good practice planning is an art so to speak.. make sure that you are covering all the areas that they are lacking in. Write everything down that you feel needs to be covered and insert them into your practice plans. Keep the segments short and keep the kids moving so they don't get bored.

You are half way through your season? One thing we used to do was to sit down after every game and write down the things and areas of the game that we didn't do very well, those items were put into our next few practice plans, that way we could correct them and hopefully it would happen again in the next few games - if it did, we kept working on it. One example of this from my early days as a varsity coach is -- We didn't handle the other teams press... it cost us the game, I took the responsibility, it was my job to make sure that they were ready for being pressed..... I told the team it was my fault but it wasn't going to happen again.... EVERY day after that we worked on our press offense for at least 10 minutes.

Remember, the season is a journey, not a destination, plan your "journey" wisely and things should get better for you.

Good luck and I hope this helps. Let us know how things are going.
