How do you break a player of dribbling the ball up the court all the time instead of passing?

You might try a NO dribble game... full or half court.. teaches everybody to move without the ball, get open and meet passes and come to a jump stop.... to look for the open player.

How old is the player? 7th grade on up could handle full court... the younger ones you could start from the free throw line?

Depending on what you need we do two different things. If we are running our early offense, I only allow my point guard 2 or 3 dribbles before they pass the ball ahead. Ideally, in our half court offense, we need our point guard to pass the ball before they cross half court so we harp on it at practice. Timing is also extremely important because we need our wings to V cut before the ball is at half court so they will be open as our point is at/near the line.

Hope this helps.

Every team I 've coached has had this issue. What we do is have a no dribble scrimmage where each player has to move without the ball and learn to pivot and pass against pressure.

It keeps all the players involved as opposed to watching a player pound the ball.
