Post subject:  Shooting Question

There are different philosophies abt which finger on the shooting hand should be in the middle of ball; index, middle finger, or split between them. My question is, once it is determined which finger is best for a player to keep the ball straight and with the best backspin, how do you ingrain the habit to catch and shoot from that position if it doesn’t come naturally?

Use the drills on this page to develop good shooting habits and technique:

It takes a lot of reps. We usually start close to the basket and slowly move further away... to maybe 10-20 feet, depending on the age and strength of the player. With beginning we usually start away from the basket and shoot to a spot against side or backboard, spot on the wall, or spot on the floor.

Once the muscle memory is developed, you eventually start adding movement and challenging the player more.

Hope this helps.
