How do you teach court awareness?

The first thing they need to be able to do is to dribble with their heads up... dribbling and passing drills will help them to be fundamentaly sound in those two areas.

Then they have to be able to see the court...finding the open player... then its about practicing and knowing where your players are supposed to be. Some of the best player/passers I ever had were great at the NO LOOK pass... they had seen the open man and knew how to get him the ball.

You can start with 3 on 3 drills - this way there are less defenders to worry about at first......(more court and less players) then move it up to 4 on 4 before you go with a full squad. By adding players slowly they get more comfortable finding that open player.

They have to be comfortable with the ball and be able to handle a little pressure.
