How do you guy utilize your asst. coaches to many times I've walked in a gym and see the head coach putting his stamp on the practice and the asst just stand around watching and talking to each other. Please give some examples of things you assign to them when running certain drills, putting in a offense, teaching m2m D. etc..........

I think this depends on the experience the other coach has. Pick out his strengths and let him work with the team that way. I had one excellent coach that I let take the Defense every day. There were times I wanted to make adjustments but he ran that part of practice. Made him feel better and it certainly added many years to my coaching career.

You can let them teach inbounds plays under, sideline and full court..... or your pressing package, your press offense etc. Spread the wealth so to speak, that will make them better coaches, it will make your life easier and everyone will benefit by it. JMO

Don't get me wrong, the kids all knew who the head coach was but they responded well to both of us. I was the varsity coach, I didn't go down and run my lower level practices.. or games... so why not use that same philosophy with your team?

I broke up my coaches by position, for skill work and offense/defense for execution and by team for scrimmage.

I let them feel their way, as I do with players. I want them to be strong and active and as long as they were imparting my philosophy and attitude, I would let them coach.

For scouting, I divided the coaches by team. I would create a defensive game plan against their offense while the coach responsible for scouting that game would develop an offensive game plan against their defense.

In games, the coach that scouted our opponent would take the other team while while my other assistants would concentrate on our team.
