Hello my name is Nikki and I coach my daughter booster league basketball team. I attended one of your camps this summer and loved it! Can you help me with coach techniques for teaching screens i coach 5 & 6 grade right before school ball and i would love to learn what they should know to be school ball ready. my team has played together for 4 years and i want to make sure they all are prepared for the next step. Thank you so much for your time and help.

To get them ready for middle school and high school, skills are the most important things to focus on... dribbling, passing, pivoting, decision making, lay ups, shooting, defensive footwork, etc.

Regarding offense, it starts with spacing, cutting, and ball movement. All important fundamental concepts. You want kids to learn "how to play". Then when ready you add screening.

Here are a few screening resources:

Couple of quick adds to Jeff's comments regarding screens:

1) The player setting the screen needs to sprint to set the screen.

2) Let the other player know you're setting a screen by holding up a fist or some type of communication.

3) The player receiving the screen needs to wait for the screen to set before using it. A big mistake I see is the player leaving too early and basically rendering the screen ineffective.

3) The player receiving the screen should set up their defender by going the opposite way first with a few steps.

4) The player receiving the screen needs to sprint around the screen coming either shoulder to shoulder with the screener or low touching the side of the screener. The point is to not allow their defender the ability to get in between the screener and them.
