Hi -

I am coaching a 6th grade team with many first year players. There are 15 players on the team and oftentimes I am the only coach at practice. I am looking for some advice on designing a practice with this many players that will allow me to give as much feedback as possible to the players.

Thanks

Bryan

My first bit of advice is you really need to get an assistant who can commit to helping you during practice. I imagine out of 15 players, there has to be a parent (or two) that would be willing to help with practices. I think this is essential.

Regarding the practical piece of designing a practice that will be efficient, you'll probably have to break it down into different areas (stations) so players aren't standing around. Hence the reason for getting folks to help with practice. You almost have to look at this like running a mini-camp of sorts. You're rotating kids through the different areas, coming together as a group to discuss concepts and build teamwork, then dispersing into those groups again.

Maybe Jeff can kick in with some links to drills/skills.

That's the issue - I don't have someone who can consistently be there. So I have done some large group instruction on individual skills (everyone has a ball so that helps) and also used a lot of continuous 2-2 and 3-3 drills.

Any other advice is appreciated.

I used a lot of drills from our camps and clinics when you have to work with a large group. Here are a few. Unfortunately there are a lot I use that aren't documented:

Spin outs at each basket (players start under basket and rotate to get an efficient rhythm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUCr5K8ijFY

Shell drill - Have red, white, and black teams of 5. One team out (against wall on baseline), ready to rotate in on D. D goes to O and O goes against wall. With practice you can get them rotating fast and minimize down time.

Dribble at chair. Line chairs on the rimline. Need 8. 2 players per chair. Can use line or start on opposite sides and make moves at same time.

5v5v5

5v5 full court - first to 4 points wins. Winner stays. Makes it very competitive and I find it's better to have short quick games.

Players in rows. There are lots of ballhandling, footwork, and defense drills where you put players in rows. Here's one example:
